La CLAVE: Sin Luz Workshop

The LA CLAVE Sin Luz Workshop is an in-person presentation designed for small audiences. Trained individuals use a flip chart to present the fictional story of Olga, a recent divorcée who moves back in with her parents and begins to present both psychotic and depressive symptoms. The story helps relate the signs and symptoms of psychosis, distinguish between life stressors and more serious symptoms of a mental illness, communicate how and where to get help, and discuss the potential barriers that may present themselves within any of these steps.

An important part of the La CLAVE campaign is the evaluation of whether it leads to positive outcomes.

In particular, we will measure whether the campaign leads to a reduction in the time it takes for people with serious mental illness to seek services at the San Fernando Mental Health Clinic.

In addition we want to learn the following:

(a) whether the campaign can improve the communicates’ knowledge of serious mental illness,

(b) what are the factors that help or hinder people seeking services, and

(c) does early help-seeking lead to people with serious mental illness function better than those people who seek help late in their illness.

If the campaign is found to reduce the time to treatment then the campaign could be used in other communities.
